This experience is a whole vibe, but also comes with many questions. That’s why we’re here to help! We are giving you the rundown on all things Prom dress shopping – Prom Dress shopping 101 if you will!
When to Start Shopping:
Real talk—most people don’t realize how early they should start shopping for their prom dress. While we’ve got plenty of off-the-rack options (meaning you can snag it and dip the same day), not every size, color, or style might be available right away. If you’re set on something specific, we might need to place a special order.
Special orders take time, and don’t forget about alterations! So, the earlier you start, the smoother the process. No stress, no rush—just plenty of time to get your perfect look. You’ll thank yourself later, promise.
Sizing:
Heads up, prom dresses tend to run smaller than your go-to mall finds. Don’t freak out if your prom dress size is a size or two up from what you normally wear. So, if you’re usually a size 6, your prom dress might be more like an 8 or 10—totally normal!
If the fit isn’t spot-on right away, no sweat. We can always order the right size or pull from the designer’s stock, as long as there’s time. And keep in mind, almost every dress needs a little tailoring—whether it’s a hem or adjusting the straps. If it’s a bit big, it’s an easy fix! So, don’t stress if your fave dress isn’t an exact fit off the rack. Your stylist has got you and will make sure you’ll be slaying.
Who to Shop With:
We know it’s fun to go shop with your bestie for that perfect dress, and that’s totally okay! But, we always recommend bringing along mom, dad, bff, grandma- or whoever may be helping buy your special dress. Those people are important, these dresses are pretty magical and you may end up finding THE dress! At Runway Bridal, we always register dresses to your school, so you can show up in your very own dress, without the stress of matching someone else. If you end up leaving that dress behind, someone from your school could potentially come claim it in the meantime. Or, if we are unable to order a dress due to the timeline, and that dress you love ends up being sold off the rack to someone else, it’ll be time to start from scratch. We want you to be able to wear the dress you fall in love with, and to be prepared to find that dress when you’re shopping!
Come With an Open Mind:
You’ve probably been daydreaming about your prom look for ages, but here’s the thing: a lot of shoppers come in with one idea and end up falling for something totally different. Keeping an open mind about styles and colors is key—you never know what dress will surprise you and become the one!
Shop Within your Budget:
We totally get it—those stunning dresses hanging on the rack can be super distracting! But the last thing we want is for you to fall head over heels for something that’s out of budget. So, try to stick to dresses that fit your price range; trust us, you’ll be grateful later! Just a heads-up: prom dresses usually range from about $299 to $999 on average.
